Ex Machina (2015)

Now I know that I am a little late to the game with this one but I enjoyed the movie so much when I finally got to see it(thanks Amazon Prime) that I decided that I need to write a review and discuss it with all of you especially before the Oscars this weekend!

Ex Machina is written/directed by Alex Garland from 28 Days Later and Dredd and stars Alicia Vikanader, Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac. The film is about a programmer who works for Blue Book named Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), the wolds largest internet search company much like Google, is selected to visit the remote home of the companies founder and CEO Nathan (Oscar Isaac) to test the humanity of what is considered to be the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI), the beautiful Ava (Alicia Vikander).

This movie is beautiful and visually stunning especially given that the film only had a budget of 15 million dollars. The effects used in order to give Alicia Vikander the robot body are amazing when on display. The scenery shots are beautiful and stunning while the scenes that take place inside the residence have a simplistic elegance about them. The movie that Garland was able to put together with such a small budget still kinda blows my mind given that movies with significantly larger budgets often can’t pull of the same quality of movie.

While the movie thrilling and suspenseful at time it does have a slight predictability to it, especially given the events that lead to the conclusion of the movie. There are several conversations between the main characters give a lot of foreshadowing toward the end of the movie. Though this happens the movie does have some twists and turns that have you questioning who else in the house is a robot and who is a human. There were several times I found myself changing my initial guess to something else and then changing it back and then again changing it. To this aspect the movie succeeds very well. Ex Machina will have you questioning what it means to be human and what it means to be machine, especially given the fact that AI is likely not that far off given that Google is currently in development of one themselves.

Overall I give Ex Machina a 7.5/10

I hope you all enjoyed this review and I will try to get more up as I figure out a possible schedule for these things. If you have any suggestions please leave them in the comments below! Also, I will likely be doing trailer reviews especially for anticipated movies such BvS, Civil War, Warcraft, X-men and so on.
